Features of Islam
Islam isn’t a limited or narrow religion. It’s not just about rituals or beliefs that stay confined to a small part of life. Islam is a complete and balanced way of living that connects faith, morality, and daily actions.
It’s a system that covers every aspect of life — spiritual and practical, personal and social. Islam guides belief, worship, ethics, law, and character. It builds a foundation for individuals and societies that are healthy, balanced, and just.
Islam helps people find harmony between their spiritual and material needs, shaping both the heart and the world around them.
The key features of Islam are best described in a well-known story from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Omar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
“One day we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah when a man appeared. His clothes were pure white, and his hair was jet black. He showed no signs of travel, yet none of us knew him.
He sat down close to the Prophet, with his knees touching the Prophet’s knees, placed his hands on his thighs, and said:
‘O Muhammad, tell me about Islam.’
The Prophet replied: ‘Islam means to bear witness that there is no god except Allah, and that Muhammad is His Messenger. To perform the daily prayers, to pay zakat (charity for those in need), to fast during the month of Ramadan, and to perform Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House of Allah if you are able to.’”
The man said, “You’ve spoken the truth.” Omar said they were surprised, because the man both asked the questions and confirmed the answers himself.
Then the stranger asked, “Tell me about faith (iman).”
The Prophet said:
“Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and destiny — the good and the bad of it.”
The man said, “Tell me about excellence (ihsan).”
The Prophet replied:
“It is to worship Allah as if you see Him, for even though you do not see Him, He surely sees you.”
Then the man asked, “Tell me about the Hour (the Day of Resurrection).”
The Prophet said:
“The one being asked knows no more about it than the one asking.”
The man continued, “Then tell me about its signs.”
The Prophet said:
“When a slave girl gives birth to her mistress, and when you see poor shepherds competing in building tall buildings.”
After that, the stranger left. The Prophet turned to Omar and asked,
“O Omar, do you know who that was?”
Omar replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.”
The Prophet said,
“That was Gabriel. He came to teach you your religion.”
This hadith beautifully sums up the structure of Islam — its beliefs, practices, and deeper spiritual meaning.
Islam is the only true religion accepted by Allah and the way through which we find salvation.
The Qur’an says:
“The religion before Allah is Islam (submission to His will).” (Qur’an 3:19)
And:
“If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (submission to Allah), it will not be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter, he will be among the losers.” (Qur’an 3:85)
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also said:
“By the One in whose hand my soul is, anyone who hears of me, whether a Jew or a Christian, and dies without believing in the message I was sent with, will be among those in the Fire.”
(Reported by Imam Muslim from Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him.)
Islam, therefore, isn’t just a religion — it’s a complete, practical, and meaningful way of life. It’s built on faith, action, and excellence, guiding the believer to live with purpose, balance, and peace.
