Basics of Islam

Beliefs, Pillars, and Core Teachings

Islam is a faith built on belief, worship, and daily conduct. At its heart, it teaches people how to have a relationship with Allah, how to treat others, and how to live with purpose and balance.

Core Beliefs in Islam

Islam is founded on six core beliefs. These beliefs shape how Muslims see the world and their place in it.

Muslims believe in:

  • Allah – the One God, who created everything and has no partners
  • Angels – beings created by Allah who carry out His commands
  • Revealed Books – including the Qur’an, which is the final and preserved revelation
  • Prophets and Messengers – sent by Allah to guide humanity, including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad ﷺ
  • The Day of Judgment – when every soul is held accountable with justice and mercy
  • Divine Decree (Qadr) – that Allah has knowledge of all things, while humans still have free will and responsibility

These beliefs are held in the heart and guide a Muslim’s actions and intentions.

The Five Pillars of Islam

The Five Pillars are the core acts of worship in Islam. They structure a Muslim’s life and strengthen their connection with Allah.

1. Shahada (Declaration of Faith)
Believing and declaring that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger.

2. Salah (Prayer)
Performing five daily prayers throughout the day. Prayer is a direct connection between a person and Allah and is meant to bring peace, mindfulness, and discipline.

3. Zakah (Charity)
Giving a portion of one’s wealth to those in need. Zakah purifies wealth and reminds Muslims to care for others.

4. Sawm (Fasting in Ramadan)
Fasting from dawn to sunset during the month of Ramadan. Fasting builds self-control, gratitude, and compassion for those who struggle.

5. Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca)
A pilgrimage performed once in a lifetime if a person is physically and financially able. Hajj represents unity, humility, and devotion to Allah.

Core Teachings of Islam

Islam is not only about rituals. It is about how a person lives and treats others.

Key teachings include:

  • Sincerity – actions are judged by intentions
  • Mercy and compassion – toward people, animals, and the environment
  • Justice – standing for fairness, even when it is difficult
  • Honesty – in speech, business, and relationships
  • Kindness to parents and family
  • Helping those in need

Islam encourages balance—between worship and daily life, fear and hope, effort and trust in Allah.

Islam Is a Journey

No one practices Islam perfectly. Learning happens step by step, and growth takes time.

Islam does not expect instant change or complete knowledge. What matters most is sincerity, effort, and turning back to Allah again and again.

Every small step counts.
