Aspects of Islam
Belief
The foundation of Islam is summed up in one simple but powerful statement of faith:
“There is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
This declaration is what brings a person into Islam. It’s not just a phrase to say — it’s a truth to understand, believe in, and live by.
When someone truly understands and accepts this testimony, they become a Muslim. The next step is to learn and follow the teachings of Islam: living according to what Allah has revealed and staying away from what goes against His guidance.
The Qur’an and the Sunnah (the teachings and example of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) are the two main sources that guide a Muslim’s life.
The first part of the declaration — “There is no god but Allah” — rejects all forms of false worship and denies the existence of any being or object that deserves worship besides Him. It confirms that only Allah has the right to be worshipped, with no partners or equals.
To fully live by this belief, a person must understand and act upon seven essential qualities connected to the testimony of faith:
- Knowledge — knowing what the declaration truly means and rejecting ignorance about it.
- Certainty — having no doubt about the truth of this belief.
- Sincerity — being free from all forms of idolatry or showing off in worship.
- Truthfulness — being genuine in faith and avoiding hypocrisy.
- Love — filling the heart with love for Allah and His message, which removes hatred and builds peace.
- Submission — living in full obedience to Allah and His guidance.
- Acceptance — embracing this truth openly, with sincerity and conviction.
These qualities define what it means to truly believe in the Oneness of Allah. Faith in Islam isn’t only about words — it’s about knowledge, understanding, action, and a heart connected to its Creator.
