How to Make Wudu: A Clear Step-by-Step Guide

Wudu is the purification Muslims perform before prayer. It prepares the body and heart for standing before Allah. Learning how to perform wudu is one of the first steps for anyone beginning their Islamic journey, and it is simple once you understand the sequence.

This guide explains the full method in a straightforward way that is easy for beginners.

1. What You Need Before Starting

Before making wudu, make sure of the following:

  1. The water is pure and permissible to use.
  2. Your private areas have been cleaned if you used the bathroom.
  3. You intend in your heart that you are making wudu for the prayer.

There are no required words for intention. You simply know in your heart what you are doing.

2. The Fard (Obligatory) Actions of Wudu

These are the actions that must be performed for wudu to be valid. They come directly from the Quran and the Sunnah.

  1. Washing the face
  2. Washing the arms up to and including the elbows
  3. Wiping the head
  4. Washing the feet up to and including the ankles
  5. Following the correct order
  6. Doing each step without long interruptions

Everything else you will see in the Sunnah sequence is recommended and completes the beauty of wudu.

3. The Sunnah Sequence: How the Prophet Performed Wudu

Below is the complete step-by-step wudu as taught by the Prophet.

Step 1: Begin with Bismillah

Say “Bismillah” before starting.

Step 2: Wash the hands three times

Wash both hands up to the wrists, making sure water reaches between the fingers.

Step 3: Rinse the mouth

Take water into the mouth, swirl it around, and spit it out. This is done three times.

Step 4: Rinse the nose

Sniff a small amount of water into the nostrils and blow it out. This is also done three times.

Step 5: Wash the face three times

The face includes from the top of the forehead to the chin and from one ear to the other. Make sure the entire area is reached.

Step 6: Wash the arms three times

Wash the right arm beginning at the fingertips and going up to and including the elbow.
Then wash the left arm the same way.

Step 7: Wipe the head once

Wet your hands, then wipe over the head from the front to the back and back to the front.
This is done once.

Step 8: Wipe the ears

With the same wet hands, wipe inside the ears with your index fingers and behind the ears with your thumbs. This is included in wiping the head.

Step 9: Wash the feet three times

Wash the right foot up to and including the ankles.
Make sure to wash between the toes.
Do the same with the left foot.

When you finish the last step, your wudu is complete.

4. Common Mistakes to Avoid

These are common beginner errors. Being aware of them helps ensure your wudu is valid.

  1. Leaving dry patches on the face, arms, or feet
  2. Not washing the elbows or ankles fully
  3. Rushing through the steps too quickly
  4. Using too little water so that areas remain dry
  5. Using extremely excessive water (disliked)
  6. Breaking the sequence with long interruptions

Wudu should be done gently, thoughtfully, and without waste.

5. When a Muslim Should Not Worry Too Much

Many Muslims worry that:

  • they did not wash correctly
  • they missed a drop
  • they made a small mistake

If you did your best and washed as described, your wudu is valid. Islam does not want you to feel stressed or constantly doubtful.

Certainty is not removed by doubt.
If you are uncertain about something, assume purity and move forward.

6. Using Minimal Water

The Prophet used very little water while performing wudu. You do not need to soak yourself or run large amounts of water.
Gently washing each limb is enough.

7. What to Do if You Are Unable to Use Water

If someone cannot use water for medical or health reasons, they may perform tayammum (dry purification) using clean earth.
This is only for special situations, but it is a mercy from Allah when water cannot be used.

8. Wudu for People With Chronic Leakage or Discharge

Some people cannot keep wudu because of constant leakage, discharge, or medical conditions.
They follow the ruling of the people of excuses.

This means:

  1. At the beginning of each prayer time, they clean the area lightly.
  2. They place a panty liner or cotton if possible.
  3. They make a fresh wudu.
  4. Whatever exits afterward does not break the wudu.

They pray normally until the next prayer time.
This keeps worship manageable and removes hardship.

9. Summary of the Steps

Here is the wudu sequence in short form:

  1. Say Bismillah
  2. Wash hands three times

  4. Rinse nose
